DIY Maintenance Tips for Your Roof
Your roof protects your home from damage caused by high winds and big storms. Replacing it is an expensive prospect that can cost more money than you expect. While you can always call us for help when you need it, it’s just as helpful to practice some simple maintenance. Check out some of the simple DIY tips you can use to keep your roof in great shape this year and cut down on the repairs it needs.
1. Perform a Visual Inspection
A visual inspection gives you an easy way to look for problems that can worsen as the months pass. We recommend looking for algae, moss, ivy, and other substances growing on the roof. Ivy and moss can grow between the shingles and apply enough pressure that the shingles come loose. Algae and similar substances can spread to your walls and clog your gutters.
During the visual inspection, always check the gutters and look for any nearby trees. Tree branches that hang over the roof might tear off shingles or break through the roof itself. If you don’t want to remove the trees, trim, or cut back the branches to keep them away from your roof. It’s also smart to look for any shingles in your gutters or yard that you’ll want to replace.
2. Clean the Gutters
Many of the calls we get come from locals who experience problems because they ignore their gutters. Gutters are an important part of the roofing system. Clogged gutters can damage your roof as well as cause ice dams to form. Gutter guards are easy to install and keep leaves and other debris out.
If you don’t have guards, cleaning your gutters will require a little more work. You need a ladder for stability and gloves to protect your hands. As you clear out the debris you see, keep an eye out for birds and other wild animals that often nest in these spaces.
